York, (the Minster, Viking Exhibition, Castle Museum, National Railway Museum) can be easily reached within an hour, as can the historic city of Durham (Magnificent Norman Cathedral and resting place of St Cuthbert. The beautiful spa town of Harrogate is also close by where garden enthusiasts can visit the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Harlow Carr.

An abundance of historic houses, gardens and other sites of interest are on our doorstep. The breathtaking remains of Fountains Abbey and the English Heritage properties Rievaulx Abbey, Whitby Abbey and Mount Grace Priory are all close by. Castle Howard, the setting for "Brideshead Revisited", Beningborough Hall, Newby Hall, Ormesby Hall and Helmsley Castle (English Heritage) are all within easy reach to name but a few.

A beautiful stretch of coastline, with quaint fishing villages like Staithes, Robin Hood's Bay and Runswick Bay, is within half an hour's drive and the historic town of Whitby can be reached either by car or a spectacular train ride along the Esk Valley line. This line also links up with the North York Moors Railway at Grosmont where trips can be taken on steam trains through the moors to Pickering. Further away you can enjoy the bracing sea air and beaches at Scarborough

There are also many local attractions appealing to both adults and children such as Captain Cooks School Museum, Beamish Open Air Museum, Eden Camp, Ryedale Folk Museum, Sion Hill Hall Falconry Centre and Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land theme parks.
